Death, taxes and Facebook layout changes are immutable facts of life.   The new Facebook Timeline is now the standard layout for Facebook brand pages.  Perhaps the most important graphic design aspect of the layout change is the “Cover”.    That’s the full-width graphic along the top of the otherwise barren page layout.  Here are just three of our favorite examples of how to use this space to full effect.

At the top of this post you’ll find a slideshow with large screenshots examples of the REALLY killer Facebook cover images we’ll discuss below.

1. Smirnoff

Many creative designers have tried to play with the positioning of the logo area over the cover image, but Smirnoff U.S. shows us exactly how it’s done.  The Brand favors the atmosphere of the sexy and young, but the unexpected 3D effect of a hand reaching out on the left to grab the logo/product hero shot add a whimsical twist to their otherwise standard messaging.

2. Converse

Photo collage is a tried and true cover photo approach.  It’s an easy way to combine all facets of your brand in a cohesive and broadly appealing way.  Converse, using a few handy color photo filters and a touch of Gamma correction, give this old graphic treatment an interesting retro vibe–exactly on-Brand for someone like Converse.

3. Sharpie

The ubiquitous permanent marker is most frequently associated in an office context, but this cleaver design impresses.  Intricate detail and a little red accent blends well with the logo and the quirkiness and individuality of the coffee cup doodles adds interest while still showing off what a Sharpie can do.  This one is perhaps my favorite.
