WordPress Importer is a plugin authored by WordPress for exporting and importing content (Posts, Pages, Comments, and Custom Post Types).  It also will import things like images!  Here’s a basic tutorial on how to export and import using WP Importer.

Export Content

First off, we need to export content from WordPress.  To do this:

  1. Login to the WordPress Admin
  2. Under “Tools” click on “Export”
  3. Filter for what you want to export
  4. It’ll generate an XML file for you to save locally

That’s it.  All the information that goes with your selected export filters is now in a nice and organized XML file–ready for import.

Now that you’ve got your exported file squared away, it’s time to import that content.

Here’s how:

  1. Login to the WordPress Admin where you want the new content to exist
  2. On the left, under Tools, select “Import”
  3. You’re presented with a list of formats you can import. In this case, choose “WordPress.”
  4. If you don’t already have the WordPress Importer plugin installed, it’ll prompt you to do so
  5. Then, you browse for that XML file you exported and choose “Upload”.

It may ask you if you want to import images too. We would suggest you select “Yes.”  It’ll automatically download all those images from the original site you exported the content from and import them into this WordPress install.

That’s it.  It all sounds more complicated than it really is.
