On a cloudy Friday afternoon around 4, Dylan Mathis walked into my office for his interview and said “Want to grab a beer?”  A strong opening line.  We headed out to my favorite watering hole and after about 5 beers, JDM had a new copywriter.  The conversation went something like this…

What drew you to JDM in the first place?

JDM popped up on my radar when I decided I didn’t want to get caught in a web of red tape at a bureaucratic mega-agency and started looking for smaller, tech-savvy agencies that are free to apply truly creative solutions to their clients’ problems.  After reading a bit about the agency, the word ‘BEER,’ boldly displayed on the site’s navigation bar caught my eye.  Already, it sounded like the firm for me.

What do you think you could bring to JDM?

I know how to listen to clients’ wishes carefully and focus solely on methods that will turn those wishes into reality.  I’ve got a knack for finding a voice that speaks in a language that ‘creates reactions,’ as you say.

What do you LOVE about advertising?

I love that it’s constantly changing.   It evolves with the world of digital media it inhabits, which has grown exponentially in recent years (which is good for me, as I’m perpetually consuming some form of digital media or another).

Do you have a pet peeve?

Poor grammar and misspelled words bother me – as per any copywriter worth his (or her!) salt.    However, now that I think about it, one ‘pet peeve’ of mine is despite all the articles, books, and essays I’ve read and written, I don’t think I’ve ever come across the word ‘peeve’ in a context other than this one.  That really peeves me.

What’s the dumbest thing you’ve ever done?

Long story short: after a 12-hour, scotch-laden bus ride to Colorado, it took me about 30 minutes (and almost as many falls) to ski my first bunny slope. I ended up losing my lunch right in front of the children’s ski school.   If you enjoy scotch before you ski, you’re gonna have a bad time.  I haven’t been able to enjoy a good scotch since.
