JDM is a digital agency, but we certainly know our way around the print world.  Over the years we’ve had a lot of experience with various printers and have even been known to write a review on some of our favorites.  So, when Shmoggo, a new online print shop, asked us to review them, we agreed and secretly did a test print run.   The results were, well, not good.

The goal at Shmoggo is evident in their site. What it lacks in style it MORE than makes up for in being ridiculously easy-to-use.  They also make it easy to pay by taking all major credit cards as well as PayPal.

Shmoggo pricing isn’t the cheapest and there doesn’t seem to be a way to pay for expedited shipping or even to set our expectations on delivery.  No biggie.

Shmoggo Quality – or lack there of

So the user interface is awesome, but it IS a printer after all.   We secretly uploaded exactly the same file to Shmoggo as we had already used on an earlier print run with our favorite printer, Overnight Prints.   When the Shmoggo cards came in, we compared them closely.

The saturation is a bit better than Overnight, but the paper quality is awful and the resolution is just plain bad.   Looking at the two cards side-by-side you can see how blurry and pixelated the fine details of the Shmoggo cards are compared with identically priced Overnight Prints cards.

Overall, I feel Shmoggo should have invested a little less in their website’s interface and a little more in their actual printing equipment.   We will not be using or recommending Shmoggo to our clients.   If you had a better Shmoggo experience, feel free to tell us about it in comments.
